About

Derrick Silas is the Communications Director for the City of Enid, Oklahoma.

Mr. Silas is  a native of Missisippi and a 1999 graduate of Mississippi Valley State University where he earned a BS in Computer Science. He did additional graduate work towards a Masters in Teaching while employed as a Database Administrator at Mississippi Valley State University.

Mr. Silas has a background in several areas: customer service, sales management, marketing and advertising, strategic planning, assessment, proposal and grant writing, mortgage and student loans, data entry, system and database administration, and computer hardware/software support. 

Through his marketing efforts and social media strategy, Mr. Silas successfully increased website visitors 25% from 2008 to 2009. Additionally, he led the city in a facelift of the municipal website which resulted in the Savvy Award from the City County Communications and Marketing Association (3CMA), the Silver Summit Creative Award, and the Sunny Award recognizing an A+ (plus) rating from the Sunshine Review.

He has used his futurist abilities to lead the City of Enid into the forefront of mobile, innovative, social media, crowdsourcing, gov2.0, and other government technologies. In December 2011, Derrick was appointed as a member of the Government Technology Applications Review Board (GTARB) by the Speaker of the House of Representatives in the State of Oklahoma. He is the Treasurer for the National Association of Government Communicators (NAGC), member of the Oklahoma State Webmanagers Group (OSWG), and member of the National Association of Government Webmasters (NAGW). He served previously as Secretary for Inspire Greater Enid and Communications Director for NAGC. His work in numerous industries (education, government, corporation, hospitality, sales, management, factory industry, retail, and music production) has made him an asset to the City of Enid.

Derrick enjoys writing poetry, hymns, psalms, and musical compositions. In addition, in his spare time, he gives voice and music lessons (piano, guitar, trombone, trumpet, saxophone, clarinet, flute, drums) to children and adults.
