Greg Sowell was named Richardson Director of Communications in February 2010. Sowell is responsible for managing the activities of the Communications Department that includes the City’s Citizens Information Services (CIS) group, Citizens Information Television (CITV) group and Convergence Media. The Communications Department, along with members of the City’s Information Technology Services staff, is responsible for implementing Richardson’s communications, marketing and open governance initiatives.
Sowell has more than 20 years of experience as a communications professional with an expertise in crisis communications management. Prior to coming to Richardson, he served almost three years as Communication Manager for the City of Mesquite, where he led the communications efforts during the Gulf Coast evacuations from Hurricanes Gustav and Ike. As an Information Specialist in Martin County, Florida for six years, he created several public outreach programs and helped lead the communications response during that county’s direct hits from Hurricanes Frances, Jeanne and Wilma.
His background also includes more than 11 years working in television, with roles both in front of and behind the camera at NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox news affiliates in Lubbock, Texas; Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and West Palm Beach, Florida.
Sowell holds a Master of Business Administration from Florida Atlantic University specializing in crisis and emergency management and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Telecommunications from Texas Tech University. He is a past vice chair of the North Central Texas Council of Governments’ North Texas Communicators’ subcommittee, currently serves as president on the Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers board, is a board member of the City and County Communicators and Marketing Association (3CMA) and is a member of the Public Relations Society of America.
